And we've got the beer incentives, going to the next level got several big sporting events coming up, and some big tech events too. And I've got some nice music for you to get that summer feeling going. And of course, I'm going to tell you all about my birthday weekend too. So let's get started.

Craig Williamson:

In COVID News, I found out something this week that was just amazing to me, I don't know whether you've heard about this or not, but dogs are able to sniff out people who are COVID positive. And this is just incredible. So effectively, they work on the sweat or the perspiration of the poor people who are infected by COVID. But trials have shown dogs to be about 96% effective at sniffing out those who are positive. So if you can imagine it has been used in some big sporting events, even in the US where the dogs can go quickly up and down a line of people waiting to get into a sporting event. And they're able to sniff out anyone who's COVID positive. Obviously, that's a lot quicker, a lot less first than actually having everyone do the standard PCR test or a lateral flow test. And yeah, the accuracy is quite astounding. So do look out for dogs sniffing out COVID in the future. Now lots of vaccine things going on this week, we had the Pfizer jab approved for 12 to 15 year olds in the UK, although we're not quite sure if they'll be applying it for that age group just yet. And we've also had the Janssen vaccine, which is a single dose vaccine approved in the UK as well. So big news there. I talked last week, or I think it might be in the week before about Prince William getting his injection and I was a big admirer of his princely monarch. And we had an article that gave us some tips on how to get our own princely monarch. Well, last week, we had the Duchess of Cambridge getting her vaccine. And I think it's only fair that I repay the compliment and say well actually, she has a very nice home too. She was wearing a sleeveless top, which really helped obviously, William had his long sleeve. So I had to roll it up a bit of an amateur move. Kids had a nice sleeveless top, which just made the vaccine simpler. Got some nice still images there and she has a lovely, so yeah, lovely pair of arms on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they get their vaccines. Now I've talked about some of the incentives for vaccinations in the US where some states are having lotteries or giving you a free beer. Well, the beer angle has just been stepped up a notch. Anheuser Busch who are keenly known for their Budweiser beer, that's kind of their main brand, but they do have many other brands as well. Well, they have said that when the US hits its target of 70% of adults being partially vaccinated, they're going to give all those adults are talking for $5 worth of beer. Wow, that's everyone. Now, it's not quite as simple as that. They're not just going to mail it out to everyone in the country. I think you're going to have to send in some kind of proof to them, but then they will give you $5 credit. And it's not just off Budweiser. It's amongst their other drinks too. And they have some of my favourite drinks. I'm not known for drinking manly drinks. I don't like beer. I tend to like cider, which I'm not sure Anheuser Busch do any cider but they do have a couple of drinks I like one is I've been known to be partial for when in America to a Bud Light with lime or Bud Light with orange. Yeah, that's how adventurous I am and they are so refreshing and you get this massive can that can last you a whole evening. If you drink as slowly as I do. The other one I like is Lima Rita. Now that is is quite dangerous stuff is quite high percentage. I think it might be around 10% in a huge can. And it tastes It tastes like limeade effectively but it's a bit of a cross between limeade and a margarita. I think they call it a malted beverage. It's not a true Margarita. I don't think there's tequila in it, but it's called a Lima Rita. If you're in the states have a little look in any supermarket or chemist and you'll get a nice big kind of Lima Rita very refreshing, highly recommend that. So I could probably get one of those with a with a $5 voucher on I don't live in the US. So that doesn't apply to me. But once the US hits that 70% Mark, and I think the target is to do that by July the fourth, the deal will go live and then you've only got seven days to make your claim. So do keep an eye on that and make sure you get your $5 worth of free beer away from COVID. We had more information last week about the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and the plans that are going to go in for that for next year. I think it was actually the first ever episode of this podcast back in November where we just had the extra public holiday announced in the UK. So we're now having a four day bank holiday weekend which is Thursday, the second of June to Sunday, the fifth of June in 2022. This is next year, not this year. And there's also going to be a big live concert at Buckingham Palace and many other events too. And that's to celebrate the Queen's 70 year reign. And so really look forward to that next summer. Hopefully everything back to normal, we can all just relax and enjoy a big celebration with the Queen for her Platinum Jubilee

Craig Williamson:

The NBA Playoffs are still in full swing, the round one games have all finished now. And we've got actually quite a predictable finish in this conference semi final. So the teams ranked first, second and third in the Eastern and West Western conferences have all gone through. So it's kind of stuck true to form, which is a bit of a shame because I do like an underdog to get through. But then again, after such a long season, it seems unfair if the teams that have got the backer best record don't actually make it through to those finals. So anyway, some good ties to be had in the conference semi finals, which will be coming up this week. Also, the French Open tennis is still in full swing. Lots of great action going on. A lot of top seeds are still in there and playing well. Last night, I saw a little bit of Tsitsipas, you know he's my favourite Tsitsipas, because you've got to said Tsitsipas as many times as you can sit to pass beat john Isner, and Tsitsipas is now through to the fourth round where Tsitsipas will play someone who I don't know yet, but it gives me another reason to said Tsitsipas now. So Tsitsipas through. And the ladies and men's final will be coming up this weekend. So something to look forward to there. Did you enjoy your week off football, I offered you a week of football you've had that week, it's over. If you don't like football, unfortunately, we've got two huge tournaments going on. And I've got a couple of free gifts for you as well. So we've got euro 2020, which is taking place in 2021. They didn't want to change the name, I guess they've invested a lot in logos and probably branding and toys and who knows what else. So it's still euro 2020. But it's taking place in 2021. And it's across a whole host of host cities across Europe. So Rome back who some Petersburg, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Bucharest, London, Glasgow, Seville, Munich, and Budapest, all hosting games during the tournament, the semifinals and finals all taking place at Wembley Stadium in London, which will be great for English fans. And maybe we can get through at least to a semi final, that would be terrific progress, I think, for the team. So your 2020 start on Friday of this week, it's the opening game turkey against Italy, and that's in the Olympic Stadium in Rome. And then we've got three games on Saturday and three on Sunday. Now, one of the great things about these football tournaments in the summer used to be that you get so many games in a day, you get three or four games in a day. And they're all on TV, and it's so special. But we've really been spoiled with football. Obviously, since the pandemic, all the games have been televised here in the UK, in the Premier League. So there are many days where you've had four, maybe even five games back to back on TV. So unfortunately, that just doesn't seem that special anymore. But it is going to be exciting to watch international football, high level high stakes or is on the line. So yeah, really, really excited to get going with this. So after that opening game on Friday evening, Saturday, we have well Switzerland, Belgium against Russia and Denmark against Finland. And then on Sunday, it's the Netherlands against Ukraine, Austria against northern Macedonia. And then the big one for English fans on Sunday afternoon. It's England's opener at Wembley against Croatia. So really excited for Euro 2021 of the big things with the summer tournaments is you get a wall chart. Now if you buy a newspaper in England, you'll probably get a wall chart with that you can buy a magazine and get a wall chart. And this is just a sheet of paper that has all the fixtures in one place. You can see who's playing on what there because it can get confusing the so many games going on what time are they on? Where whereabouts in the world are they went to England next plane, all those questions that you've got are answered in the wall chart. And I've got a free wall chart for you. It is the official UEFA Euro 2020 wall chart. And I've put a quick link for it. You can download it as a PDF, you can print it out or just keep it on your computer and keep it handy to follow all the action. So if you would like that free gift, the Euro 2020 PDF, match schedule wall chart, please go to thank the week.com slash euro that's EURO, thank the week.com slash euro and it will take you straight to that wall chart how exciting. It's like being a child again. Obviously the other good thing about tournament's is football stickers, but I don't do that anymore. So just stick with the wall chart for now. If you are into the stickers, then they're out in the shops too. Now, as well as having euro 2020 we also have Copa America 2021 which is fantastic to see. So we've got some wonderful South American football action. And that's all starting on Sunday. So in terms of the schedule, we've got Brazil kicking off the tournament against Venezuela on Sunday, followed by Colombia against Ecuador and then obviously a lot more fixtures following the following week. And I do have another wall chart out for you for Copa America. So if you got to thank the week.com slash copa, which is COPA Thank the week.com slash COPA, then you can download a Copa America wall chart. And you can follow all those fixtures too. There is some uncertainty about the tournament, it's moved location a few times due to COVID. And I think there are some rumours that some of the teams might not be too happy about taking part. So we'll have to keep an eye on that. But Fingers crossed, copper, America will start on Sunday, and we'll get to see Brazil in action in that opening game.

Tech

Craig Williamson:

I've got some new tech that you might be interested in. And a couple of big events coming up this week, that also might have you excited as they do me. So firstly, new gadgets, Google had a surprise announcement last week, they dropped their new pixel buds, which are their wireless in ear earphones. And they're available for pre order starting now in the US and Canada. Significantly, these are only $99. Now that I know appreciate that it's still kind of expensive for headphones. But actually, that's a big drop down from the previous Google Pixel buds, which were $179 at starting. So these ones are now $99, 99 pounds in the UK. And they look a little bit smaller as well. So the old ones were a little bit larger and kind of stuck out your air a bit. But these actually look quite nice. They're supposed to have pretty good battery life about five hours, but then up to 24 hours because they do recharge in the case which has access a little battery. And also you can give that little case a quick charge to get more juice in them. And yeah, initial reviews so that these are pretty nice little ear buds. So if you're in the market for some earbuds, and you don't quite want to fork out the big money for something like the apple AirPods then do give the Google Pixel buds a look. I mentioned there were two big events this week. The first one is WWDC. It is not a wrestling tournament. It is Apple's event worldwide developer conference. So it's more for developers. So it's more software based and app based. But there can be some new products announced as well. But the big thing is normally the new versions of their operating system. So that's taking place from Monday to Friday, this week, lots of goodies. If you're into Apple software, and Apple operating systems, we are told that there might be news about iOS 15, which will be the next version of the operating system on their iPhones, also iPad os 15, which is the version for their iPads, mac os 12, watch iOS eight, TV, os 15, you're keeping up with all these numbers, and possibly some hardware as I said, but it is more software focused. So if you've got an iPhone and iPad or an Apple Mac, an apple watch or an Apple TV, then there might be some new software announcements for you unlikely that the software will will come out immediately. But there should be some good snippets on what to look out for in these new versions. So look out for W W DC this week. And also this week if you're into your gaming, it is the E three conference which is the gaming conference. And that begins on Saturday, June the 12th and goes through to Tuesday of the following week. So if you're into games and want to see some big new announcements of new games for the consoles, whether it's the Xbox or the PlayStation, then look out for E3

Craig Williamson:

And on the topic of games still, it is the time for a new season of Fortnite. So this is chapter two season seven. I still don't really understand the chapter and season numbering. But anyway, Fortnitenew season is coming on Tuesday this week. That is June the eighth. So if you play Fortnitemy son loves it. I've told you this before, so something for him to get excited for probably something for me to download on his Xbox while he's at school. So then it's ready for him to go when he gets back from school. So I'm sure a lot of excited kids coming home. And yeah, getting excited to play that game on Tuesday. So new season a Fortnitethis week to look forward to. And I've got a music recommendation here in England. We've had some sunshine over the last week. It's been glorious. It's been kind of the first test of summer, we did have some nice sunny weather might have been back in March or April now but that seems like a distant memory. But we've had some consistent sunshine. It feels like summer and even though it's not officially summer yet, so it's time to get into some summer music. And for me, summer music is country music. That's right, you've got to get into some country music. I used to strongly dislike country music. I'll admit I didn't like it. But I probably hadn't given it a fair hearing. Having said that, it was kind of the old fashioned country music that I didn't like kind of the whiny violins and guitars is still not really my thing. But when I lived in the US and I happen to hear a lot more country music because you just can't escape it. I actually realised there's a lot of really good popular country music now, which is just really catchy and just gives a really lovely summer feel. So some of my favourite country artists probably Thomas Rhett is my favourite. He's got four or five albums out all of which are immense. Also Jake Owen and Chris Lane. So if you want some country music, listen to those guys. But also, I've got a radio recommendation for you. If you're in the US, you've probably got a country music station. in your local area, and you can tune in your radio in the car or at home to listen to one of several country music stations. In the UK. However, we don't have that much country music. It's not that popular. But there's a great internet radio station I want to tell you about called Chris Country. That's Chris as in the name CHRIS, Chris Country. And you can ask your smart speaker to play Chris Country, and it will play this country music radio station, all the latest us country music and UK country music as well and just presented really well. And yeah, I really recommend that just gives you a real nice flavour for the summer. So go and tune into some country music. And if you're in the UK, ask your smart speaker to listen to Chris Country.

Life

Craig Williamson:

It was my birthday weekend last weekend and we had a terrific time. I've already mentioned the sun has been out here in the UK and it was beautiful. So we had a really nice time we had my mum came down, my wife's parents came down. It's also my wife's birthday as well. So lots of reasons to get together. We had a nice lunch actually just on an eye on the Friday. So we had a long weekend. The Monday was a bank holiday. And we took the Friday off work as well. So we had a lovely Friday pub lunch alongside a river just somewhere very local to where we live. Just really, really beautiful at a really nice tasty steak really enjoyed that. And then family came down on Friday evening. So we hung out for a while. I got my big balls out again. And that's my big balls bingo app, of course. And we had a little game of bingo in the evening and that was really good fun. And yeah, I really enjoyed that. Harper bless her made us a wonderful birthday cake. So Harper had this idea this year she wanted to make a birthday cake and he had no help whatsoever. So she sourced all the ingredients she baked the cake she decorated it and it was amazing. So she made it into two flip flops. So it was a pair of flip flops two separate cakes, and she asked us what we liked in it so I wanted to Victoria sponge so my flip flop had lovely jam and cream inside and don't want to chocolate so hers had lovely chocolate buttercream inside, decorated really nicely with frosting on the top and little sweets on there as well. And yeah, it was just a really impressive cake. So huge thanks to Harper for that we all enjoyed tucking into the cake. And on the Saturday we all had a lovely day out at the beach. We went to a place called Studland, which is down on the Dorset coast. Really fun to get there actually because you get to drive through sandbanks, which is one of the most expensive places to live, I think in the world. But certainly here in the UK, there's just so many properties down there that are worth so many millions. So you drive through Sandbanks, which is kind of like this little Peninsula, and then you get on a little chain ferry. So that takes your car across to this little outlet, which is Studland. And then you drive along there a little and get to just a beautiful beach. So really, really nice sand. Lovely See, obviously quite busy. In the UK when we get a bit of sunshine, we all seem to go to the seaside. But we had such a good time there. kids got in the water, some of the oldies got in the water as well, not me, not not really my thing. But I did sit there and enjoyed the atmosphere, maybe played a little country music on my speaker, which was nice as well. And yeah, it's just a really nice way to spend a day out there in the sunshine. So yeah, really fun weekend did various other things with the family. Of course, you're all dying to know what presents were exchanged. Well, I did get on a new tree. And that was for the garden. And she has been looking for a new Silver Birch Tree. So I got a Silver Birch Tree, which she was very pleased with. As you know, Dawn has bought me the InkPlate 10, which is the E ink display that I'm looking forward to receiving. It's this crowdfunded display. And that should be on its way. And I did actually get an update from the input Fox saying that they have finished manufacturing. And now they're sending it out to their distribution centres. So their aim is to distribute that to purchases by the end of June. So fingers crossed, really excited to get that and spend some time trying to programme that and look forward to seeing what I can do with it. Another big gift was kind of to myself, which is the way these these things go these days. So I kind of put quite a bit money together that people have given me all that served up over the last year and I bought myself a special treat. What is that treat? Well, I'm going to make your way. I'm going to tell you all about that next week, because it'll just take me a little while to explain. So I'll go into my special gift to myself next week. But a little spoiler alert, he did give me the opportunity to buy a new cable. So you know, you can't give yourself a better gift than one that requires you to buy a new cable. And if you listened last week, you'll know all about my love of cables. So yeah, really good time for our birthday weekend and had a lot of fun there. Another thing I wanted to tell you about was my son Henry had his football match this morning, and he won six three, which was great. And it was out there in the sunshine sun blazing down on us and there was no shade to be had. But really nice to go out and watch him and he's in two teams. So one generally plays on Saturday one on Sunday, the season is coming to a close. So this was one of his last games. I had the privilege of being the linesman or the assistant referee if you like. And I tell you what, it's a thankless task, because you run up and down, and you're there to judge offsides. And when the ball goes out, and my words you get some stake in these games, and not from the players, I must say that the players were all very, very polite, but from parents and coaches is just crazy. So I gave an offside, you basically flag offside, the opposition team, so you're running up and down with your own teams defenders. So you flag if the opposition are offside, and they scored a goal, but their guy was clearly offside, which I flagged and then I got an earful from the court chequered here, on the far side, saying that he was never offside. A fan behind the I guess a parent of one of the teams who also kind of passively aggressively said, Oh, I think that needs to go to VAR, implying that it was a tight decision. It was not a tight decision. Do not question by integrity. I have been actually manned up by my own team. In the past when I've been linesman because I'm too honest. They're like someone who's going to give them the benefit of the doubt. And I'm too honest to be doing that. You know, if I see someone offside, I'll flag it offside. So yeah, I've been in trouble before for girls going in against our team. And our coaches have thought that they were offside or our parents or thought they were offside. And I've said no, they weren't offside. I'm not gonna flag it. We weren't it's not offside. So yeah, it kind of grates when someone gets me like that. And then the other one was later on. I had a parent moan at me because there was a foul throw. And the referee had explicitly told me not to flag foul throws, he was going to handle that. So some referees like you to do that. Some don't. But yeah, I got abuse from that as well. So the moral of the story, be nice to people. You know, everyone's volunteer in the times all the coaches are volunteering, you know, the linesman, it just poor people like me, just parents of players who've who've been asked to do it, and we're doing your face. So you know, don't give us a hard time I did enjoy the game. Other than those little incidents, nothing kicked off. It was all very, very civilised. But don't question my integrity is the lesson learned.

This Week in the summer holidays, I have done three days of tennis in the morning. And I have spoken about this in the Easter holidays, as well. This time, we were in the oldest group. So I did it with my friend again. So I was the youngest one in the group. But surprisingly, I wasn't the worst. Because when we were in the middle group, I kept looking over to the oldest group and they looked very big and very good. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the group got split into two different groups. And we were in the group with not as good people. So we won the tournament on Tuesday. And on Wednesday, we came second in the tournament. But we started quite good. And then on Thursday, we just did a tournament against everyone. We did a tiebreaker against those people that we came second to and won against, and we won the tiebreaker. And I really enjoyed it because it's not just what you might think of a tennis club would be where you just play tennis all day, which Yes, it is sort of like that. But you also do games with tennis. And I'm very happy that I didn't have any bird poo dropping on my head this time!

Let's get some fatty foods in us and let's do some dangerous activities. Okay, Monday, June the seventh it's chocolate ice cream day. So go out enjoy some chocolate ice cream. Ben and Jerry's is our favourite we love the Phish Food ice cream. That's a good one. But any of their ice creams are so good. We might partake maybe a little earlier Sunday night seems to be our Ben and Jerry's ice cream night. But if you can manage it on Monday, the June the seventh have some chocolate ice cream. Now I threw this one in there because it was completely a different thing to what I expected Tuesday, June the eighth is Upsy Daisy day. Now the phrase Upsy Daisy to me, is what happens if someone trips over, you'll say oopsy Daisy, and I guess I've never really known what that meant. So I probably associated with someone making a mistake or doing something that they shouldn't have done. And you just say upsy Daisy, actually upsy Daisy, Daisy is all about being positive and uplifted and bright and cheery. Which is kind of the opposite of what I thought it would be. But it does make sense. So what it's about is reminding you to pop up and face the day with your eyes to the sky which is like a daisy greeting the sun and Upsy Daisy. So enjoy Upsy Daisy Day be very positive, bright and cheery. On Tuesday, June the eighth. On Saturday, June the 12th keep an eye out because you might see some people knitting in the wild, because it is Worldwide Knit In Public there. So if you see someone sat out on a bench or maybe at a table in public, flagrantly knitting out there in the wild, then that's what they're doing. So go along, have a little chat with them. It's about creating awareness of knitting as a fun hobby and a productive hobby. And maybe just have a chat with a knitter. And they'd be keen to help you to learn to and share their needles and wool. So enjoy knitting in public on Saturday, June the 12th. And we finish with a very wholesome activity following up on knitting Sunday, June, the 13th is International Axe Throwing Day. Yes, we all like throwing an axe now and again. But actually, this is a special day. And there are places in America apparently, where you can specifically go to throw axes. And I've seen pictures of people who've been to these places, they've got like little targets like a shooting range, but you just get a rack of axes, and you just throw them at targets. And I have seen it at some fairs in the US. I think health and safety would prevent that kind of activity happening here in the UK. I could not see that going on. But if there are any places that you know of do let me know. And you can have a good throw of the axe on Sunday for International Axe Throwing Day. Thank you so much for listening as ever. Links to all the stories are in the show notes that thank the week.com slash 30. Please do connect with me on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook and alert you to the new episodes, you'll get a sneak peek at what's coming up. And I share the odd picture as well. So you might find a picture from a week or two ago of me with my medal from the Hullavington Half Marathon so it'd be great to see you connect with me on twitter, instagram or facebook @ThankTheWeek. Thanks so much for listening, and I look forward to seeing you again next week. Goodbye!
