News

Craig Williamson:

Now last week, I did joke that I was going to need a vaccine OF THE WEEK jingle. And that's come true again, because for my third podcast, there's now a third vaccine. On Monday, it was announced there's a new vaccine by Oxford and AstraZeneca shown to be highly effective at stopping people developing COVID-19. And it's far cheaper than previous jobs. So the real promising here that this can be distributed far and wide, not only in the UK, but across the world as well. In other related COVID news this Wednesday in England, we've got something to look forward to because our national lockdown. And so that means we can all get out and start to do a bit of christmas preparation, non essential shops are open again. And in lots of areas, there's restaurants, coffee shops, pubs that people can enjoy as well. So really positive news, looking forward to heading out on Wednesday. And also getting lots of kids activities back. I know my son's really missed his football, he plays for a couple of different teams. So that's training every week matches every weekend. And he's really excited to get back into that. And my daughter's got various activities too. So that's a really positive thing for everyone from this Wednesday. And one final piece of news this week, not necessarily new, but I wanted to make you aware of a couple of government schemes that might put a bit of cash in your pocket for this Christmas. There's a tax relief bonus for working from home. So if you have worked from home at all in the last several months, you can claim a tax relief which could give you up to 125 pounds back in tax. And there's also a fix your bike voucher scheme going on where the government will give you up to 50 pounds towards the cost to repair or service a bike, which is to encourage people to use alternative forms of transport. So I'll put a link to both of those in the show notes this week.

Craig Williamson:

There is riveting, exciting, snooker going on at the moment, a two week tournament, we're right slap bang in the middle of it. Now it finishes this Sunday, the UK snooker championships, and already 214 sevens. If you don't know what's new careers, you won't know what 147 is. But if you do know about snooker, then a 147 is pretty impressive and has already been to in this tournament, which is quite unusual because you often don't get a single one. So Karen Wilson and Stuart Bingham bank those in earlier in the week, and lots more action to look forward to until the final next weekend. This Tuesday, we're going to cheer on our American football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. And if you listen to Episode Two, I think it was you'll know why we're cheering them on. So it's just our little secret is the thing that we're going to keep going for Pittsburgh Steelers have won 10 they've lost zero games. The next game is on Tuesday evening. I was looking at their schedule. I think they've got a total of 16 regular season games, and then they'll have several in the postseason. So it's our little special thing, obviously sticking to positive news on this podcast. So if they do lose, I probably won't mention it here. So if I don't mention them next week, you'll know why. But hopefully we can cheer them on to an undefeated season. You know, I like watching my football on TV and there is an absolutely packed schedule this week. We've got football every single day of the week. Monday we've got to Premier League matches. Tuesday we've got Liverpool and Manchester City in the Champions League. Wednesday. We've got Man United and Chelsea in the Champions League. Thursday we've got Tottenham Leicester Arsenal, Celtic and Rangers in the Europa League Friday. We've got a premier league game, and then Saturday and Sunday. We've got loads more Premier League games. So it's a really action packed week. Pick up the Premier League matches I'm going to pick out coming up this Sunday at 4:30pm. We have Tottenham Hotspur against Arsenal. And finally a sport that you will often hear me talking about rugby union this weekend. It is the autumn Nations Cup finals weekend. I believe the games are going to be shown on Amazon TV in the UK. All the Home Nations are playing. I don't really know much about rugby, but I've got a friend who said if I talked about rugby, he'd listen to the podcast. So lots of rugby action coming up. Really exciting weekend instal. That's the autumn Nations Cup finals weekend

Tech

Craig Williamson:

I always get excited by phones, tablets, laptops. Let me tell you about the first folding laptop you've probably heard of folding phones by now. Maybe folding tablets are on your radar. But there is the world's first folding laptop from Lenovo is the x one fold. It was announced quite a while ago but this week the reviews are starting to come in. So this is a 13 point. three inch OLED display. And it's the size of a large tablet. But the key thing is that it then folds in half. So you end up with two, sort of nine or 10 inch screens. It's wrapped in leather, and it just looks gorgeous. So you can use this thing as a huge 13 inch tablet. There's also an attachable keyboard, so you can use it to as a larger screen laptop, but you can fold it in half, you can read it like a book, it just looks so good. We'll maybe gloss over the price, two and a half thousand dollars or pounds. And just focus on the amazing technology. And that's just giving you a feel for where we're going in terms of future laptops. So really excited to see that we'd love to get one for Christmas. Not sure I can quite justify it. And I'm not quite sure anyone loves me enough to buy me one. But nevertheless, something really interesting to look forward to. Coming up on Tuesday and Wednesday I was a bit torn as to whether to put this into entertainment or tech. But it's here in tech is fortnight that is the multiplayer shooting game on all good platforms, consoles, and PC. And there's all sorts going on this week. So choose the evening there is the season ending event. That means on Wednesday, there's a brand new season starting. And on Wednesday, they're also launching the Fortnite crew, which is a monthly subscription option which gets you tonnes of ebooks and lots of other bundled items. I'm not a gamer myself, but my son is he's extremely excited about this. And I'm sure you probably know someone in your world who's a big Fortnite player. So that's something huge to look forward to in fortnight this week.

Entertainment

Craig Williamson:

You know, I love my Telly. So this week, I've got a couple of things to tell you about last Tuesday was the final of the Great British Bake Off. And I'm going to tell you the winner because I don't know who it was. I don't watch it myself. But I know my family do and they were pretty excited to see the finale. Lots of people enjoy this show. It's looks like it's been done really well this year. So tune into that if you get the chance. And the other thing I wanted to talk about is a very old TV programme, but something that I bought myself as a black friday purchase a bit of fry and Laurie is an old Comedy sketcher in the UK, featuring Stephen Fry, and he Laurie, Hugh Laurie went on to star in house which made him a household name in the US as well. And the entire series have a bit of friend Laurie, some 26 episodes was available on Google Play video for about 13 pounds, I think so I dropped the money on that. I already have it on DVD. But it's so difficult to watch DVDs. It's such a chore to put a DVD in a DVD machine. So I would much rather have something that I can just click a few buttons on the remote and stream. So I now have a bit of frane. Laurie in all its glory. And I'm looking forward to watching a few episodes of that this week,

Harper

Craig Williamson:

And now a book review and some inspiration from my daughter Harper.

Harper Williamson:

This week, I'm thankful for education, mainly women's education, because I would like to talk about a book that I'm in the process of reading. You might have heard of that before. And it's called rise up. In the book, there are all sorts of children that have done amazing things for the world. One of those people is called Malala Yusufzai in her village was taken over by a tribe called the Taliban. So they thought that girls shouldn't have education. So they banned it. But Malala fought against them and created a blog for the BBC. It was called Diary of a Pakistani schoolgirl. Because of this two men from the tribe had jumped onto a school bus she was writing and asked where Malala was, she was shot in the head but survived. To hear the story in more detail. I recommend the book, there are so many great children in the world. And that book might inspire you to be one too.

Craig Williamson:

And that book is called rise up ordinary kids with extraordinary stories by busta books, and I'll put a link in the show notes at thank the week.com

Life

Craig Williamson:

As you already know, the podcast has been my life for the last few weeks as I've had an intense period of activity, getting it set up and getting it running. This week, it's all been about preparing for launch. So last Sunday, I officially launched a podcast. And all that really means is I actually started telling people about it, because I'd already made a few episodes already slipped them out there, you need to publish in all the major directories like Apple podcasts, Spotify, Google podcasts, you need to do that, at least a week in advance because it takes them so long to get them in the directory. So that podcasts already been out for a while, but I haven't really told anyone. So I've been producing all the promotional material, getting all my social media in order. And today was the day I finally told friends and family, most of whom knew nothing about this at all. So a bit of a nervous moment for me because I don't really like being the centre of attention. And so this is a bit of an unusual thing for me to do. So anyway, hopefully we've got a few listeners, hopefully a few people joining us along on this journey as we Thank The Week. Now as you join me on this journey, I know we're getting to know each other a little bit better. So I feel I can start to confide a few things in you. And this week, my little confession is I was excited by an Amazon purchase of a selfie stick. If you'd have told me at the start of the year, all the crazy things that were going happened in 2020. I might have believed a few of them. But I would not have believed that in November 2020, I would have been buying a selfie stick and a little embarrassed by it, but I'm sharing with you because we're friends. Now, you've actually have to tune in next week to find out why I bought the selfie stick and how I used it. So that's a little teaser for you for next week.

Outside

Craig Williamson:

Not so much outside this week, as inside as I describe in graphic detail, the unboxing of a piece of wood. I've got word and I'm about to get it out. It is Tuesday. And I've taken delivery today of the table top for my new desk, just managed to get through the day can unpack it during the day because I was working in the office. straight after dinner, I've entered the office got everything out. And now I've just brought it inside. So I've got my legs ready, I've got the package. And I'm now going to open it up and have a look at the wood. It's well protected. So I'm going to try and slip it out. That's it out of the box. It was very, very well packaged, which is really good to see. So a cardboard box on the outer now it's wrapped in foam padding. So I'll just take the foam padding off and I'll get the first look really nice smell that smell of fresh wood. She is out and she is a beauty. Really, really nice word nice, thick, solid pine. Finished really nicely on top, I went for an onyx finish, which is kind of a dark, rustic sort of look. Yeah, first impressions, it's really, really well done. So now I'm gonna lay down on the floor and look at how to attach these legs have a couple of nice solid steel legs. And I tell you that these legs are extremely heavy, and not the strongest of guys. But yeah, I thought the table top was heavy, but these legs are really heavy. So now I'm going to put them in place one on each side. So what I've done is I've turned the table upside down, and I've put the table on the floor. So now I'm going to rest these two metal legs probably one at a time, figure out exactly where they're gonna go. They have a stickler for things me so I want to make sure they're exactly central to each other and central to the table itself. And I'll probably use a pencil to mark a few marks and double check all my measurements. And then I'll get attaching. And that is the last screw in the second leg. Wow, the desk is up really pleased with that. Gosh, I can tell I'm not used to such hard work. But that is the desk built and I'm extremely pleased. I can tell you the word surface I got from Etsy. I got this from a seller called Penny wood bespoke he's in Kings Lane, which is a good Speedway town so as my support for that, but he's done an excellent job. And I got the legs from a place called feet.co.uk. That's f w ee double t feet. Dakota, UK. And those are terrific as well. So really industrial design. But yeah, extremely pleased. I'll put a link in the show notes. Thank the week.com. So that is my desk built. Now it's time to add al my things back onto it.

Random

Craig Williamson:

So much to look forward to this week in this random category. Let's start with Saturday, Saturday, the fifth of December. It is Small Business Saturday, actually a really important weekend. Really important there for small businesses is encouraging us to go out there and support the small businesses. Obviously in England with a lockdown being lifted. Lots of businesses will be reopened this weekend. So go out and support your small local businesses. Also this Tuesday, it is bifocals at the monitor Liberation Day. I say again, bifocals at the monitor Liberation Day. This is a day to raise awareness about people that wear bifocals at a monitor and the difficulties they often have knowing which part of the lens to look through. I'm a recent bifocals where surprisingly, this does ring with me. And the other thing is just to raise awareness so that if you are struggling to see a monitor, you do go get an eye test and get some suitable glasses. Very important day. This Tuesday, bifocals at the monitor Liberation Day. We will culminate this week in an announcement. This Tuesday is the first of December and I declare that Christmas music can begin to be played. If you listened last week, you'll have already enjoyed a full week of eating mince pies. hold off on that music just for a few more days. Tuesday the first of December you are permitted to By Craig's Christmas rules to play Christmas music, and I've got a recommendation for you. I haven't listened to it myself because that would be breaking the rules. But there's a new album out by Jimmy column called the piano man at Christmas, a big Jimmy column fan. And that kind of jazz vibe is really nice for Christmas. So I'm really hoping that's a good album. I'll be listening to it on Tuesday. Hopefully you can join me in doing the same. Obviously, the first of December has many other side benefits. The most obvious is that you can start your advent calendar, whether it's chocolate, whether it's wine, whether it's candles, whether it's beer, whatever you might like in your advent calendar, Tuesday's the day to start talking into that. So that's extremely exciting for everyone. And not just children, many of us adults look forward to that as well. And from Tuesday, it is National tree dressing day. So that's the traditional day when you can start to dress up your Christmas tree and start to get out those decorations. Now, one of my rules generally says that you should not start Christmas decorating until at least the first of December. I'd actually recommend a week or two even later than that. But I understand in these times people are looking to something to bring a bit of joy into the life. So I have seen Christmas decorations going up very early some in November. I'm making no judgments for this year. So I'm relaxing my official rule about Christmas decoration so you are free to decorate willy nilly. But for me, I'll be waiting till just a bit later into December. And that was episode three of Thank The Week. Thank you very much for listening. Please do subscribe and tell your friends all about us. Until next week. Goodbye.
